David Geraghty took this photo of me with four maquettes of Julia Gillard, for a story in The Australian. For me the maquettes are like pencil sketches in a notebook. I don't try to finish them, but just to take them far enough to learn what is right or wrong about that way of depicting that face. I just put them aside and start another one. If i corrected it, I might obliterate something that later on I would find useful. When I am confident I will start the full size head, and hopefully will be able to work freely and intuitively, largely from memory, and produce a final version that captures the best of all the maquettes.
When I do a portrait bust (this one is for the Ballarat Prime Ministers Avenue) I start off my making several small, quick maquettes. When they get to a certain stage I just abandon them mistakes and all and get on with another one. The result is eventually I can do the final large head working quickly and freely almost entirely from memory. This little one is a half body, it's quite small, just a useful excercise Peter Nicholson
